The majority of people surveyed in Germany regard Russia as a threat to the country's security.
A total of 56% of respondents to public broadcaster ARD's Deutschlandtrend survey believe that Germany is currently under a very serious or serious threat from Russia. By contrast, 39% consider Russia to pose little or no threat at all.
People in the west and east of the country view the vast nation to the east very differently: Whilst 59% of respondents in the western German states perceive Russia as a strong or very strong threat to German security, the figure is only 42% in the eastern German states.
For 36% of western Germans, Russia poses little or no threat to the country's security, whereas among eastern Germans, the figure is 47%.
For the ARD Deutschlandtrend poll, Infratest dimap surveyed 1,319 eligible voters between Monday and Wednesday, with a margin of error between two and three percentage points.
On Tuesday, the German government blamed the Russian state for a failed attack involving an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig airport and announced sanctions. The Kremlin denies any involvement in the incident.
Russia has been waging an all-out war against Ukraine for four and a half years now. Germany has been providing political and military aid to Ukraine since the start of the war and is now regarded as the country's most important supporter.
Currently, 38% of those surveyed consider Germany's provision of weapons to Ukraine to be appropriate, whereas 14% believe it does not go far enough, and 42% believe it goes too far, the highest recorded by Infratest dimap in this regard since the start of the war in Ukraine.
