The Safeway grocery store in Garfield Park is slated to close this week.
The store owner in August announced the impending closure of the supermarket at 2176 Shelby St.
The announcement said the store was closing due to rising costs and other challenges around the location.
"Over the years, the area has changed, and rising operating costs, ongoing construction, and other challenges have made it increasingly difficult to continue at this location," the owner said in a social media post.
The owner operates four other Safeway store locations in Indiana, which will remain open, it said.
The store's final day of operation will be Sept. 5, the owner told IndyStar, adding Garfield Park supermarket employees have been offered jobs at the remaining Safeway stores in Indianapolis.
The local Safeway stores are not affiliated with Safeway Inc., the supermarket chain owned by Albertsons Companies.
Albertsons Companies on Aug. 14 said it is closing some Safeway stores in the wake of failed merger with The Kroger Co.
"Albertsons Companies, which includes Safeway, continually evaluates its store network to ensure we are best positioned for the future," Albertsons said in the Aug. 14 statement.
The court blocked Kroger from buying Albertsons in December 2024, prompting Albertsons to sue Kroger for breach of their agreement. Albertsons claimed Kroger ignored the FTC's feedback and failed to cooperate, causing the deal to fall through.
Officials in Washington state also filed a lawsuit to block the merger, resulting in a King County judge blocking the merger there as well in December 2024.
