Families can step into an indoor butterfly-themed experience at Fall River Heritage State Park from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 12, when the visitor center is scheduled to be transformed into an indoor butterfly arboretum featuring activities, crafts and educational programs.
According to a community announcement, the event is designed to celebrate pollinators through hands-on activities, music and storytelling while offering free family-friendly entertainment.
Organizers plan to create an indoor garden filled with colorful plants and displays centered on a pollination-themed Lego exhibit. Visitors entering the space will find activity stations throughout the room, along with opportunities to learn about butterflies and their role in the ecosystem.
Families will be invited to take part in a bilingual reading of "Señorita Mariposa" by Ben Gundersheimer. The program also includes a sung performance of the "Ode to Señorita Mariposa."
Guests can participate in craft activities and visit treat stations during the event. According to the announcement, s'mores and other refreshments will be available as families move between activities.
Outdoor programming will include a StoryWalk along the boardwalk and pollination gardens, where visitors can read "Señorita Mariposa" page by page while following the monarch butterfly's journey.
Representatives from The Trustees will also provide information about pollinators and butterfly conservation. A character appearance by "Miss Butterfly" and photo opportunities are planned.
The event is expected to conclude with an eco-friendly paper butterfly release. Organizers said a limited number of paper butterflies will be available for participants.
Children will be invited to release the paper butterflies together as the afternoon concludes, creating a finale centered on community, imagination and nature, according to the announcement.
The free event is presented by The Waterfront Cultural District, Creative Arts Network Inc. and DCR/Fall River Heritage State Park in cooperation with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
