President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine had effectively run out of interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defence systems after Russia launched another major overnight attack, saying only one ballistic missile was shot down.
According to Ukrainian authorities, at least nine people were killed and more than 30 injured in Kiev alone.
Emergency crews were still responding to multiple fires that broke out in the capital and the surrounding region, Zelensky said in a post on social media.
He said 18 residential buildings, a school, the Lithuanian embassy and infrastructure facilities were damaged. The Russian strikes hit "ordinary residential buildings," he added.
Russia launched 35 missiles overnight, including 27 ballistic missiles, as well as 185 attack drones of various types, Zelensky said.
Kiev was the main target, but the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions also came under attack.
Only one ballistic missile was intercepted because Ukraine had no interceptor missiles left for its US-made Patriot air defence systems, Zelensky said.
Ballistic missiles are particularly difficult to shoot down because of their high speed, and Patriot systems are widely regarded as the most effective defence against them.
"It is critical that partners hear that these capabilities are needed not somewhere in stockpiles for hypothetical scenarios, but here and now, to contain and stop the Russian war in Ukraine.
"Every package of ballistic missile interceptors saves the lives of our people. And every night without them results in more casualties. I thank everyone who is working to strengthen our defenses," he wrote.
