The dog days of summer are still going strong in South Carolina, but days are getting shorter and the nights cooler for fall and there is still one more summer weekend to be had.
Labor Day weekend is coming, meaning it's time for one last barbecue, one more dip in the pool or a last-minute vacation to ring out the last feeling of summer. Being a federal holiday means a three-day weekend for many and many businesses and offices are closed.
Here's a look at what's open and closed on Labor Day, whether you can buy booze in South Carolina and everything else you should know about the federal holiday.
In the United States, Labor Day has always been observed on the first Monday in September and honors the American labor movement and workers' contributions, according to the History channel.
This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, marking a long weekend for many to gather and enjoy various events.
The United States has celebrated the federal holiday for 144 years, dating back to the first unofficial observance in 1882, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. It has been an official federal holiday for 132 years, since Congress passed the act in June 1894
All South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed, with transactions resuming on Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to the South Carolina Department of Administration.
Post offices will be closed across Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson counties. Mail will not be delivered on Labor Day, with service resuming the next business day, according to USPS,
FedEx will suspend most delivery services on Labor Day, though limited express options will be available, according to the company's holiday schedule.
Some FedEx Office locations will remain open with modified hours.
GreenLink transit services will not run on Labor Day, according to the City of Greenville.
In Greenville, the solid waste division will also be closed on Sept. 7. Curbside trash collection will resume the following day, and residential waste and recycling centers will remain open, according to City of Greenville.
Spartanburg County sanitation services will not operate on Labor Day, according to the Spartanburg County holiday schedule.
The City of Anderson reports that the Sept. 7 sanitation route will be combined with the Sept. 8 pickup, according to the City of Anderson.
Chase, Wells Fargo, AllSouth, Synovus, SouthState, and Bank of America are closed all day, according to AARP.
ATMs: Available 24/7 for withdrawals, deposits, transfers, and balance checks.
Many stores will remain open during their typical hours for the holiday on Monday, Sept. 7, but some will have limited hours or be closed.
Target: Regular store hours 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Walmart: Regular store hours; many locations are open 6 a.m.–11 p.m.
Home Depot: Regular store hours, usually 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
Lowe's: Regular store hours, typically 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
TJ Maxx: Regular store hours, typically 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
Big Lots: Regular store hours, generally 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
Marshalls: Regular store hours, commonly 9:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
Aldi: Open for limited hours, often 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
Sam's Club: Plus members: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; Club members: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Harris Teeter: Regular hours, typically 6 a.m.–11 p.m.
Publix: Regular hours, usually 7 a.m.–10 p.m.
Whole Foods: Open with modified hours, commonly 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
Trader Joe's: Open; hours vary by location, often 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
CVS: Open, most locations 8 a.m.–10 p.m. (pharmacy hours may vary).
Rite Aid: Open, typical hours 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
Walgreens: Open, many locations 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
Liquor stores in South Carolina can operate on Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7. Typical hours for liquor stores is 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, according to South Carolina Department of Revenue.
The only two holidays state-sanctioned liquor stores cannot operate on are Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Any holiday that falls on a Sunday also means liquor stores will be closed.
