3 small earthquakes strike North Bay

Three small earthquakes struck Sonoma County within hours of each other early Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

First, a 3.8 magnitude quake struck 5 miles east of Cloverdale at 12:57 a.m. at a depth of 3.8 miles, the USGS reported.

At 4:35 a.m., a 2.8 magnitude quake struck 4 miles east of Cloverdale at a depth of 3.9 miles, the agency said.

It was followed by a 2.7 magnitude quake 5 miles east of Cloverdale at 4:50 a.m. at a depth of 2.5 miles, the USGS reported.

Cloverdale is in the Maacama Fault Zone, which runs north from Santa Rosa and Healdsburg toward Ukiah.

Small earthquakes occurring close together in time and location are common, seismologists say. 

Reports of damage were not immediately available.
