A 70-year-old man was struck by a garbage truck in Queens Park, Perth

He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries

Police are investigating the circumstances of the fatal crash and are seeking witnesses

A 70-year-old man died after he was struck by a garbage truck in a Perth suburb in Australia.

The man was hit by a white Volvo garbage truck at about 8:50 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, while he was walking along Balaka Way in Queens Park, according to a press release from the Government of Western Australia.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the release. The 59-year-old male driver of the truck was not injured.

The victim was identified as An Yu, a 70-year-old Chinese national, 7NEWS Australia reported.

Neighbor Yuksel Terzi told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that he heard a loud noise around the time of the crash.

"It was around 8:40 a.m. I heard a loud sort of bang-ish noise. And then a few minutes later the cops knocked on the door to see if we've got any footage of the situation," he said.

Terzi said Yu had been a familiar face in the neighborhood.

"It's heartbreaking, not easy because it's someone you see almost every morning when he's walking around trying to look after himself," he told ABC.

Terzi's daughter, Neslihan, also told the outlet she knew Yu from seeing him regularly.

"It's very sad, you know, because I always see him when I leave the house," she said. "[He] always waves at me, he was a sweet man and [he] also took care of my cat a lot."

Yu suffered a stroke several years ago, walked slowly and was captured on CCTV walking along Balaka Way shortly before the crash, 7NEWS reported.

Yu's wife found him after the crash, and his two daughters, who live overseas, were traveling to Perth following his death, according to the outlet.

Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the city was supporting the truck driver involved in the crash and would review the circumstances to determine whether additional safety measures were needed, 7NEWS reported.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the person's family, loved ones and all those affected by this tragic accident," Hall said, according to ABC News Australia. "We are also providing support to the staff member involved."

Councillor Michelle Hurn of the City of Canning also acknowledged the incident in a social media statement.

"It is with sadness I acknowledge the fatal accident involving a garbage truck on our local streets this morning, and the shock it has sent through our community," Hurn wrote. "My thoughts and sympathies are with the man's family and loved ones, and all those affected."

The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking the community for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward, according to the Government of Western Australia.
