MOORESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- After a packed meeting, Mooresville Mayor Chris Carney announced he will be retiring, effective the end of September, after months of controversy and lawsuits and pressure from councilmembers.
This comes as the town faces several lawsuits accusing Carney and other officials of retaliating against former employees. The former workers claim they were fired after speaking up about an alleged incident involving Carney and a female staffer at Town Hall.
Carney blamed alcohol for the alleged incident and previously stated he would not resign from office. His fellow commissioners held a no-confidence vote against him in April, with some urging him to resign.
Carney announced that he would serve until the end of the month and turn it over to Mayor Pro Tem Eddie Dingler, effective Oct. 1.
