A Serbian prisoner who escaped from a facility in western Germany by leaping into a tree last week reportedly called himself "Spiderman."
Benjamin Limbach, minister of justice in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, said on Wednesday that there is still no trace of the 35-year-old escapee after he fled from Duisburg prison.
Limbach told the state parliament's legal affairs committee that the prisoner removed a prison bar from his third-floor window, shimmied along the fourth floor and then climbed onto the roof.
From there, investigators believe he jumped into a tree on the street in front of the prison to make his get-away.
"The small size of the opening and the fact that the escape took place at a considerable height show that this escape route was life-threatening and demanded a high degree of agility and dexterity from the prisoner," said Limbach.
"One could say that very few people would even be capable of such an escape," he added.
Nevertheless, measures are being examined to improve security at the jail and elsewhere in the state's prison system.
Limbach said the city of Duisburg is also being asked to trim back the trees lining the road in front of the prison.
It remains completely unclear how the prisoner managed to remove the prison bar.
A fellow prisoner stated that the escapee may have received an "expensive sawing tool" during a visit from a relative. "This information has not yet been confirmed," said Limbach.
