A man died Sunday after experiencing a medical emergency during a police traffic stop in Santa Clara, authorities said Wednesday.
A Santa Clara Police Department officer stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Central Expressway and Corvin Drive around 10:15 p.m. after "observing a violation," police said.
Police said the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and followed the officer's verbal commands.
Moments later, the adult male passenger - who was not identified - had a medical emergency on the side of the road, police said. He died in the hospital later the same day, according to the department.
A department statement issued Wednesday said police did not use force during the traffic stop.
Officer Eric Lagergren, a department spokesperson, declined to elaborate on the man's medical emergency or whether he exhibited any symptoms or signs of distress, citing a pending autopsy from the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
Lagergren also would not clarify why police pulled the driver over. In an earlier statement, the department said it was for an unspecified violation.
The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office will conduct a joint investigation with SCPD into the fatality, as consistent with "officer-involved incident protocol," police said.
