As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a memorial display in Corona is serving as a reminder of the lives lost and the importance of remembering one of the darkest days in American history.
Many Americans still remember where they were and how they felt on Sept. 11, 2001, but new polling data suggests younger generations are increasingly learning about the attacks through history lessons rather than personal memory.
According to the polling data, 60% of Americans ages 18 to 24 say they first learned about the Sept. 11 attacks in school. The poll also found that just 10% of Americans plan to do something to commemorate the anniversary.
In Southern California, communities are offering opportunities to honor the victims and reflect on the attacks. In Corona, 2,977 American flags have been placed on the front lawn of the Historic Civic Center.
Volunteers of all ages took part in creating the display. Each flag represents one of the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.
The memorial aims to honor the victims and help ensure that the events of Sept. 11 and those who died are not forgotten.
