A metro Atlanta officer has resigned after her arrest on assault and child cruelty charges.

Sgt. Shada Canzater, 35, of the Hapeville Police Department was arrested by the Houston County Sheriff's Office.

She faces charges of first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault and simple assault (family violence), Hapeville Police Chief Bruce M. Hedley announced Thursday.

Canzater's resignation is effective immediately, the police chief said.

She was arrested Aug. 31, according to Houston County Jail records. Her bond was $5,000.

Hapeville PD had no further comment on the arrest.

The circumstances behind the arrest weren't disclosed.
