Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A nine-story building that was condemned due to irregularities collapsed on top of a house during heavy rains in Sao Paulo on Saturday, killing two women and leaving several missing or injured.
Officials in Brazil's largest city said one of the dead women was pregnant. First responders rescued a man and a boy from the wreckage.
Firefighters continued to search for at least four other people reported missing since the 2 a.m. collapse in the east side of Sao Paulo.
Officials said at least eight people lived in the house, Carta Capital reported.
City Comptroller Daniel Falcão said the contractor is under investigation.
Construction at the site had been halted due to irregularities reported since at least 2019.
The city fined the company nearly $24,000 and ordered the building demolished, R7 reported.
Sao Paulo has been battered by heavy rains since Friday, leading to flooding, falling trees and damage to residential structures.
Elsewhere in the city's east side, a house collapsed in Sapopemba, leaving 24 people without a home, CNN Brazil reported.
In the city's south side, two homes collapsed and eight had to be evacuated due to structural damage, displacing 14 people.
