A 70-year-old hiker missing on Isle Royale has been found, but was reportedly injured and hypothermic, authorities said.
Craig Berg went on a hike in Isle Royale National Park on Sept. 5, a U.S. Coast Guard release said. Berg was found Sept. 12 by the Coast Guard and Michigan State Police with the help of good Samaritan backpackers, the release said.
"We're thankful that missing hiker, Craig Berg, was found alive and alert on Isle Royale," said Lt. Ben Eckola, Michigan State Police Eighth District Public Information Officer, in the release. "The collaboration and hard work of everyone involved in the search helped locate Craig safely."
Berg was lifted to a helicopter and flown to Marquette Regional Airport in Gwinn. Then he was taken to a hospital for further care.
Further details about Berg's condition and his disappearance are not yet known.
Assisting in the search were the National Park Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Isle Royale Seaplanes and No One Left Behind K9 Search.
"This rescue is a testament to teamwork and what can be accomplished when first responders and members of the community come together," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Wendy Janson, command duty officer, Sector Northern Great Lakes command center, in the release.
"We are extremely grateful we were able to get Mr. Berg safely off the island and deliver him to the medical care he needed."
