New Jersey will see clearing skies Sunday evening as low pressure pulls away, but a cold front overnight brings a slight chance of showers before dry, comfortable weather takes hold.

Overnight rains across the Garden State caused flooding and power outages early Sunday, with the northern part of the state experiencing waterlogged road closures and stranded vehicles — leading to a few motorist rescues.

By Sunday afternoon, the skies started clearing.

A cold front is expected to move through the state from north to south overnight Sunday into early Monday morning, potentially producing a few scattered showers or an isolated thunderstorm, according to the National Weather Service.

But high pressure will arrive from the west on Monday, bringing mainly clear skies and below-average temperatures for mid-September.

Highs on Monday are expected to reach the 70s across most of the state, with a few spots in South Jersey potentially touching 80 degrees. Northerly winds on Monday will bring lower humidity, making it feel quite comfortable.

Monday night will feature ideal conditions for temperatures to drop significantly, with interior sections of New Jersey likely falling into the 40s by Tuesday morning.

Tuesday will remain dry with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs generally in the lower 70s, slightly below normal for mid-September.

High pressure will begin to slowly shift off the coast heading into Wednesday, with a warming trend pushing highs into the upper 70s to low 80s across most of the state.

Humidity will also start to increase Wednesday as winds turn more southerly. A cold front approaching from the west Thursday into Friday may bring showers and thunderstorms back to the state.

The weather service said there's some threat for heavy rain late in the week into next weekend, but details should come into better focus over the next few days.
