Des Moines has seen more rainfall in the first half of September than it normally receives, and the rain isn't letting up anytime soon.
Here's a look at the rainfall totals from Monday, Sept. 14, and a look ahead in the week.
Since 8 p.m. Sept. 14, Des Moines has received 2.43 inches of rain and counting, according to the Iowa Environmental Mesonet. Elsewhere in the Des Moines metro, Ankeny received 2.43 inches and Ames recorded 1.08 inches during the same period.
Des Moines has received more than 8 inches of rain so far in September, according to the National Weather Service. Most of that fell during Sept. 8-9, when a storm system dumped more than 5 inches of rain across parts of central Iowa.
A typical September through this date normally sees 1.57 inches of precipitation, according to the NWS.
Here are the areas that saw the most rainfall over 24 hours as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The NWS forecasts multiple rounds of thunderstorms the remainder of the week that could bring flooding problems across parts of Iowa.
A large swath of Iowa, stretching from Council Bluffs to the Quad Cities, is under an excessive rainfall risk Tuesday. The area and intensity of the risk are expected to expand Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Thursday, Sept. 17. The highest risk of flooding is expected along and south of Interstate 80, according to the NWS.
Polk and dozens of counties across central and southern Iowa are under a Flash Flood Watch through Wednesday. Continued rainfall could lead to flooding on streets, low-lying areas, creeks and rivers.
