Poland plans to fortify its border crossings with Ukraine following the recent Russian drone attacks on a train travelling from Kiev to Warsaw and in the Ukrainian border area.
"The events of the past few days show that Russia's actions are jeopardizing the security of the whole of Europe," Poland's Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X on Tuesday.
Engineers from the Polish Army are now to reinforce the border posts with so-called Hesco barriers, which are metal mesh and plastic-sheet baskets filled with sand to provide protection against blasts or bullets, the High Command announced on X.
In addition, further observation posts and guard posts are to be built near the border crossings at Dorohusk, Medyka and Korczowa.
The Ukrainian Railway operator said on Sunday that the locomotive of the regular passenger train from Kiev to Warsaw was attacked at the Yahodyn border station.
No one was injured. Shortly before the attack, a diplomatic train carrying security advisers from several EU member states, including former UK prime minister Boris Johnson, is said to have stopped at the station.
A petrol station just 800 metres from the border with Poland was also attacked by a drone. The Polish government accused Moscow of escalating the conflict in Ukraine.
