Four people were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after a six-vehicle crash on Route 6 in Sandwich involving 18 people.
One person was trapped in a vehicle and required extrication, according to a written statement from Sandwich Fire Chief John J. Burke.
The accident happened just before 9 a.m. Saturday at mile marker 62 between the old Exits 3 and 4.
The cars were traveling eastbound on the highway, coming on Cape Cod on a Saturday morning, which is normally a high-volume traffic day.
"On arrival units found six vehicles, including two vans and two SUV's," Burke wrote.
The fire chief said two additional ambulances from Sandwich, Bourne and West Barnstable helped people at the scene, taking four to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. All 18 people were assessed, Burke wrote, but 14 refused treatment.
The Mid-Cape Highway accident is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police, who could not be reached for comment Sunday morning.
