Historically low water levels on Germany's Rhine river led Transport Minister Steffen Bilger to organize a "technical conference" in Bonn on Thursday to discuss the issue.
In Cologne, the lowest water level since records began was measured on Saturday. Dusseldorf and Duisburg also reported record lows over the weekend, which is significantly restricting the transport of goods by ship.
It is not yet clear who will attend the meeting, which has been arranged at short notice and does not yet have a fixed list of attendees.
North Rhine-Westphalia's state Transport Minister Oliver Krischer has called for the establishment of a national task force, bringing together representatives from the federal government, the federal states, local authorities and the logistics sector.
