Russia launched fresh ballistic missile attacks on Kiev and other major Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian officials said, killing at least five people and injuring 20 in the southern city of Zaporizhzhya.
Regional military administrator Ivan Fedorov said on Telegram early on Tuesday that industrial facilities and infrastructure had been hit in Zaporizhzhya.
One person was initially reported injured in Kiev. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions had been heard in the capital and urged residents to remain in shelters while emergency crews were deployed.
The Kyiv Independent reported that Russia had launched another ballistic missile attack. Ukraine's air force also warned that Russian missiles were heading towards the cities of Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv, according to the report.
Ukraine has struggled with shortages of air defence interceptor missiles after more than four years of war, allowing Russia to intensify its use of ballistic missiles against Kiev and other cities. US-made Patriot systems are considered among the most effective defences against ballistic missiles, which are particularly difficult to intercept because of their high speed.
Ukraine has several Patriot systems but lacks sufficient interceptor missiles.
Officials in Kiev fear that Russia could again severely damage the country's infrastructure with missile attacks over the coming winter, worsening conditions for millions of Ukrainians.
