BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) — The impact of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia's Pacific coast on Monday is being felt thousands of miles away in the Lowcountry.
The earthquake lasted up to two minutes in some parts of Colombia, leaving families devastated. It left nearly 200 people dead, hundreds injured and numerous buildings destroyed.
Liz Castrillon and other Colombians in the Lowcountry are coming together to help the families affected by the earthquake with a local donation drive.
The drive will take place Friday Aug.14 and Saturday, Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. until the truck is full.
Castrillon told WSAV it's difficult to imagine a place that she once called home looking so different the next time she visits.
"The people who are in this area have lived there and have family in the affected areas," said Castrillon. "In the end our families are okay but these cities are just devastated."
Organizers hope to fill the trucks and send the goods collected this weekend.
