Investigators have arrested five men in connection with a train burglary in the Cajon Pass earlier this week, including one accused of shooting at a police officer who interrupted the crime.

The crime unfolded just after 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, on a moving Burlington Northern Santa Fe cargo train in the area of Cajon Boulevard and Keenbrook Road, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials said at the time.

BNSF police responded to a report of a group of people breaking into cars of a train that was slowly making its way north through the pass, sheriff's department spokeswoman Gloria Orejel said.

"During the incident, a suspect fired a handgun in the direction of a BNSF officer," sheriff's officials said in a written statement. The officer was not struck."

Once the train came to a stop in the Summit Valley area, authorities set up a search perimeter and checked the train cars believed to have been entered by the burglars. No suspects were found.

Deputies assigned to the Sheriff's Rural Crimes Task Force soon identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Angel Castro, described as a Mexican national, according to sheriff's officials and county booking records.

Castro, along with four alleged co-conspirators, were found and arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, as they were traveling in a vehicle in the area of Valencia Avenue and 30th Street in San Bernardino, officials said.

"During a search of the vehicle, tools used for burglarizing trains were located inside," according to the statement.

Castro was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, cargo theft and criminal conspiracy, records show. He was being held without bail pending legal proceedings.

The four additional suspects, also described as Mexican nationals between the ages of 22 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of cargo theft, possession of burglary tools and criminal conspiracy.
