Unidentified victim found inside burnt home in Fresno County, officials say

A deadly house fire in Laton has shaken the small community, where neighbors are now coming together to support a family that lost everything in the blaze.

Fresno County Fire confirmed that at least one person died in the fire, which broke out just after 11 a.m. Thursday on Gonser Street between Summit Avenue and Murphy Street.

Cellphone video from the scene showed flames shooting from the home as thick smoke billowed into the air. Fire engines could be heard responding as crews rushed to contain the fire.

According to Fresno County Fire, the blaze destroyed an RV parked next to the house. Flames also threatened nearby homes and spread to nearby vegetation, prompting a response from multiple agencies.

"We had a combination of Fresno County Fire, along with Selma City Fire, and Hanford City and Kings County Fire Department," said Capt. Gary Couch of Fresno County Fire.

The loss has deeply affected residents in the tight-knit community.

"It's sad. It's sad to hear about the loss," said Laton resident Jose Navarro.

SkyView30 captured the charred remains of the home after the fire, which reduced the structure to rubble.

As the family tries to figure out their next steps, assistance is coming from both relief organizations and neighbors. Red Cross volunteers were on site to help the family, while community members are offering support.

"We're here, this little community of Laton has always been like that. We're always willing to lend a hand and anything they need, the family needs material support, that's what this little is about," Navarro said.

Residents say they want the family to know they are not facing the tragedy alone.

"They need somebody to be their for them. They need your neighbors, that's what neighbors are for," Navarro said.

Southern California Edison also responded to the scene because of a gas leak caused by the fire, according to fire officials. The leak has since been shut off.

Firefighters are continuing to investigate what caused the fire.
