Poland has cut value-added tax (VAT) on fuel and announced a cap on fuel prices from Monday up to the end of the school holidays on August 31.
VAT of 8% will apply, down from 23%, according to the plans. The Energy Ministry will also set a maximum retail fuel price each day based on average wholesale prices and the operating costs of the largest suppliers.
The Energy Ministry set a maximum price for Monday equivalent to around €1.49 ($1.73) per litre for regular petrol, around €1.67 for premium, and around €1.71 for diesel.
The government in Warsaw aims by means of the package to ease the financial burden on people returning from their holidays.
In neighbouring Germany, a temporary, two-month tax cut on fuel expired at the end of June amid repeated calls for relief for motorists.
