The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen launched five ballistic missiles towards positions near the strategically important Bab al-Mandab, a Yemeni military source told dpa on Monday.
The source, who requested anonymity, said the missiles were launched from the southern Ibb province and the al-Hawban area east of Taiz province toward positions near Bab al-Mandab.
Government forces were still assessing whether the missiles had caused any damage, the source said.
The development came a day after government forces said the Houthis had targeted the city of Mokha, near Bab al-Mandab, with ballistic missiles and drones.
The Bab al-Mandab is a strategic strait connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, forming part of the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal.
Repeated Houthi attacks in recent days have brought activity at the strategically important Mokha Port to a halt and caused extensive damage, with material losses estimated at $16 million.
The Yemeni Armed Forces said on Sunday that they had carried out 181 military operations, including drone strikes and missile attacks targeting multiple Houthi positions. The operations reportedly killed or wounded dozens of Houthi fighters and destroyed dozens of their vehicles in several provinces.
The developments come amid continued military escalation between government forces and the Houthis since the beginning of July, which has resulted in numerous deaths and injuries on both sides.
