Crews continue to work around the clock to get power restored in Northwest Indiana.
However, thousands of NIPSCO customers are still in the dark. Amid all this, classes begin Monday at most Gary schools.
Most schools that are part of the Gary Community School Corporation will open today, but with a two-hour delay.
Some progress was made to get people's power back on. But over 11,000 people are still waiting. Most are in Gary.
In Portage, cheers and clapping could be heard in neighborhoods, as people's lights slowly came back on Sunday.
Lots of debris and fallen trees still remain on streets and people's homes.
The restoration time for Portage and Gary is by Tuesday night.
"It has been 13 days since we have been without power," Amanda Finley said. "Charging my phone in my car, staying at a friend's house who does have power or just sleeping in the dark."
Over the weekend more than 60 ComEd crews were deployed to Northwest Indiana to help NIPSCO with restoration efforts.
Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said he's been in constant contact with NIPSCO
"I am extremely upset and I have communicated that with NIPSCO and I have communicated that to my constituents and I try my best to keep them informed every step of the way<' Mayor Melton said. "Every day, we have had daily briefings, even if it is just minimal in terms letting them know how many outages were out and how many outages were out or how many linemen were out. I believe the cause of this was not bringing in the appropriate amount of linemen at the beginning of this process, so we've been demanding that more linemen come in."
Later Monday morning, social media influencer Keith Lee and Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton will be joining the Salvation Army to distribute food and resources to the people of Gary. That will take place at 11 a.m. at the Roosevelt City Pavilion.
