Lodi police officers shot and killed a man Monday at the West Lodi Avenue McDonald's following reports of an armed suspect inside the restaurant, police said.
The Lodi Police Department said the suspect, 29-year-old Jonhatan Anguiano, died at the scene. Among the victims was a woman working at the restaurant who was shot just before officers responded to the area. She was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, according to police.
The incident began at about 9:30 a.m. Monday when dispatchers received a report of an armed suspect inside the McDonald's located at 200 W. Lodi Ave.
When officers arrived at the scene, they said they heard gunfire coming from inside the restaurant and discovered an employee had been shot.
Police said as officers moved toward the gunshots they encountered Anguiano. Police did not provide details about the encounter but said what happened next is the officers fired their weapons.
During a news conference Monday afternoon, Lodi Cpl. William Hinton said the shooting was isolated and there is no further threat to the public. He called the incident "rare" and said there has not been an officer-involved shooting in the last five or six years in Lodi.
Lodi resident Cheryl Steneck said she was picking up her mobile order — a Frappé — when she saw the restaurant surrounded by police. She said she witnessed a police officer draw his weapon near the restaurant.
She said she asked the woman taking her order what was happening and if she was aware that police were surrounding the business. Steneck said the employee told her there was a man with a gun inside.
The cashier told Steneck to pull forward because there was not a way for her to back up her vehicle and exit the drive-thru. When Steneck pulled to the window, she and the cashier spoke before four gunshots were fired.
Steneck recalled the cashier ducking down and putting her hands over her head, while Steneck rolled up her window without a way to escape the area.
