Prosecutors in Catawba County dismissed a murder charge against a man accused of a deadly shooting near Vale.

The district attorney says they dropped the murder charge against Thomas Christopher Banks after ruling it was done in self-defense.

Banks was arrested in June after being accused of killing Rusty Johnson along Dansbury Lane.

Prosecutors say Banks was sentenced to more than six years of prison time after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon and being a habitual felon.
