The University of Missouri is investigating the cause of a fire in a nonresident space of one of its residence halls Monday evening, Aug. 31.
The Columbia Fire Department noted this in a news release about its response to the fire. Department personnel were dispatched at about 5:46 p.m. to the 1000 block of Tiger Avenue due to a smoke alarm report.
Because of the location, the department elevated its response as if it was a commercial structure. The residence hall was evacuated, CFD companies worked to located the source of the smoke, searched each of the five floors, worked with the Mizzou Police Department on unified command and located the source in a nonresident room.
Firefighters worked to contain the fire to the area of origin and it was under control by 6:33 p.m., though personnel remained on scene to ventilate and to ensure the fire fully was out. Property damage was limited to an electrical device in nonresident room on the fifth floor.
All building residents evacuated and there were no reported injuries. Eleven fire companies totaling 27 people responded to the incident. Hall residents were able to return to the building once it was deemed safe, excluding the impacted area.
