SOUTH WINDSOR - Police said a tractor-trailer caused a nine-vehicle crash on Interstate 291 west that caused serious injuries on Monday morning after failing to slow down when approaching slowing traffic.
The crash, which also involved a school van with a 12-year-old Manchester boy aboard, sent 6 people to the hospital, Connecticut State Police said in a news release Tuesday. The van had no other children inside at the time of the crash, police said, and belongs to the Capitol Region Education Council.
Police said a 63-year-old East Hampton man was seriously injured in the crash and five people were described as suffering from minor or possible injuries from the crash.
A 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer, owned by Hartford Distributors Inc., was driving near the Exit 2 on-ramp around 7:45 a.m. when it failed to stop in time for traffic, police said. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 46-year-old Naugatuck man, was uninjured in the crash and did not need transportation to the hospital, police said.
Police said the crash is under investigation.
CREC officials did not return a call from CT Insider requesting comment on the crash as of late Tuesday morning.
