TOPEKA (KSNT) – President Donald Trump has approved two requests from Kansas Governor Laura Kelly Wednesday to issue federal disaster declarations following recent severe weather.
Jane Welch with the Adjutant General's Department said in a press release on Sept. 2 that Trump approved the requests following severe storms that caused damage in multiple areas from June 4-15 and June 18-30. She said multiple counties reported damage to utility infrastructure, roads and bridges due to strong wind gusts, tornadoes and flooding.
"This federal assistance will provide critical resources to help Kansas communities repair damaged infrastructure and move forward with recovery," Kelly said in a press release. "I appreciate these resources which helps Kansas communities access the support they need to recover, rebuild, and become more resilient."

Welch said over 40 counties in Kansas reported damage due to these storms, including the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas. She said the presidential declaration allows state and local levels of government, alongside some private non-profit groups that provide "vital and essential services," to apply for Public Assistance funds for emergency and permanent work to make repairs or replace infrastructure damaged due to the storms.
