President Trump continues to support Ken Paxton in the race for Texas' open Senate seat. But don't expect Trump to take any fashion advice from Texas' GOP candidate.
Trump met with a collection of Republican congressional candidates in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, with Paxton not among those in attendance. But Texas' Attorney General still seemed to be on the President's mind, as he listed off one of the more backhanded endorsements in recent memory.
"Ken Paxton, you might not like the way he dresses. And I say this, it's so insulting to him, but I might as well say it," Trump said as he addressed the media. "You might not... like the way he looks. You might not love his look. You might not love his television interviews. But he was the best attorney general in the country.
"He was one of the best in the entire country. And that speaks a lot louder than the suit he's wearing that doesn't look so great."
Trump isn't the only one to muse on Paxton's lack of sartorial success. The GOP nominee against Democratic James Talarico was roasted online last week for his frumpy look during a recent meeting with campaign volunteers, in which Paxton sported an untucked collared T-shirt, wrinkly khaki pants and some sort of boot-loafer combo (aka the uniform of any harried college fraternity pledge across the Lone Star State). Paxton's message to those in attendance was similarly uninspired.
"This man should be in prison, but at the very least, why hasn't he been vanquished to the employee orientation from hell??," one commenter on X wrote. "He has the enthusiasm of beige. He is more underwhelming than airline food. I genuinely cannot understand why anyone would support this man."
Paxton's campaign did not respond to Chron's request for comment as of Thursday morning.
Perhaps neither voters nor the President are impressed by Paxton's attire. That still won't deter Paxton from courting Trump's help, which he continues to receive as November's election nears. Trump visited Houston last week and led a Republican National Committee fundraiser, and Trump will be back in the Lone Star State for the GOP's 2026 midterm convention on Sept. 9 and 10.
