A passing motorist struck two Washington Township police vehicles that were conducting a traffic stop on Route 42 in Gloucester County early Wednesday, but neither officer on the scene was injured.
The officers were placing a driver under arrest for an outstanding warrant at 1:41 a.m. on the northbound side between exits 7 and 7B when the crash occurred, Washington Township police said.
One sergeant was outside his vehicle and the other was sitting inside his vehicle completing paperwork when a Mercury Milan sideswiped the police cars as it attempted to navigate the ramp to exit 7, State Police and Washington Township police said.
Both police vehicles were significantly damaged. The Washingon Township police vehicles had their emergency lights on, according to State Police.
The 63-year-old driver who crashed into the patrol cars suffered minor injuries.
"This incident serves as an important reminder to motorists: Slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along the roadway," Washington Township police said. "Police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow operators, and other roadside workers depend on motorists giving them the space they need to safely do their jobs."
