A 52-year-old man died Thursday after he was assaulted by a man "acting erratically" in East Palo Alto, police said.
His death is the Peninsula city's first homicide since 2024.
East Palo Alto police found the man with "significant" facial injuries after responding to a call around 2:21 p.m. on the 2300 block of University Avenue.
The Menlo Park man, who authorities have not identified, told officers he had been assaulted, police said. Police had earlier responded to reports of another man taking his clothes off and acting erracting on the same block.
The victim was transported to Stanford Hospital, where he died at approximately 5 p.m., police said medical personnel told them.
Police arrested the suspect, booked him into San Mateo County jail on suspicion of assault resulting in great bodily injury and a parole violation, but did not release his name.
Dubbed the country's "murder capital" in 1992, East Palo Alto's homicide rate gradually dropped and the city went more than two years without any reported killings.
Prior to Thursday's assault, the last reported homicide occurred on April 8, 2024, according to the police department.
