LATEST Sept. 6, 1:34 p.m. Three of the four northbound lanes of Interstate-5 were reopened with one remaining closed, Caltrans said in an update.
A diesel tanker fuel spill Sunday morning forced the hourslong closure of a section of northbound Interstate 5 in Castaic, backing up traffic for miles near Six Flags Magic Mountain during Labor Day weekend.
Maintenance workers were on the scene with the freeway yet to open, Caltrans said. At 12:36 p.m., the California Highway Patrol estimated 90 minutes until the northbound I-5 would reopen south of Templin Highway. The CHP later added one of the four lanes would remain closed indefinitely.
Caltrans was diverting northbound traffic to westbound state Route 126 on to northbound U.S. 101, and to northbound state Route 14.
"Due to the corrosive nature of the Hazardous material spilled on I-5 NB Caltrans has shut down all lanes until the road can be made safe for commuters," the California Highway Patrol said.
