Russia is closing the German consulate general in St Petersburg and all branches of Germany's Goethe Institute in the country, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow said on Monday.
German diplomats have until September 18 to vacate the consulate while Goethe Institute staff have been asked to leave the country no later than September 13, the ministry said.
Moscow was responding to the announced closure of the Russia House in Berlin and the Russian consulate general in Bonn after Berlin blamed Moscow for an attempted attack using an explosive drone at the Leipzig/Halle airport last month.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had called the German closures of Russian facilities a "serious mistake" and spoke of forged evidence.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov went further, describing Germany's allegations against Moscow as the "beginning of a real war."
Lavrov said on Sunday that the closures in Germany reminded him of the events leading up to World War II and claimed that the Germans apparently wanted war again, according to comments carried on the website of Russia's Vesti news programme.
