Lindsay Clancy pardon? Reddington asks Trump to consider on GMA

Massachusetts defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked President Donald Trump to pardon his client Lindsay Clancy on "Good Morning America" after her six-week triple murder trial ended in mistrial.

Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, in January 2023. Prosecutors allege the Duxbury mother strangled the three children with exercise bands in the basement of her home while her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands.

Clancy admitted to the murders, but Reddington argued she was overmedicated and lacked criminal responsibility due to mental illness, including postpartum depression and psychosis. After seven days of deliberations, the jury ultimately could not reach a decision, with the foreperson saying one juror refused to apply the law.

"I would defend that individual's right to be a holdout forever. That's part of our judicial system, and I respect that, and I would certainly defend his right to do that," Reddington said of the juror in an interview on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, Sept. 8. "What I was upset about [...] he had agreed, according to the note from the forelady, that he had doubt, but he would not apply the law of reasonable doubt as presented by the judge. That's not right."

When asked what is next for Clancy at the end of the interview, Reddington made a plea to President Trump: "I'd like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out about this case, may very well… Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is, what she has been through, and consider a pardon."

President Trump previously called the case a "horrible tragedy" when asked during a press conference on Friday, Sept. 4.

"It's a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. It can't be worse. But, we will find out what the price to pay is. There will be a price. It's going to be mental institution or jail or something," Trump said.

After the mistrial, Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz said he has not yet made a decision about retrying the case. On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Reddington told reporters outside the courthouse that he would expect Cruz to retry Clancy upon the declaration of a mistrial.

When asked about a retrial on "Good Morning America," Reddington said he's "willing to listen to Tim."

"I hope, however, after sitting through this trial and seeing the evidence that was presented from the government as well as from the defense that he would revisit that issue and hopefully would be willing to work something out that would be acceptable to both sides," Reddington said.

A hearing for next steps has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Clancy's murder trial began with jury selection on July 20, with the opening statements and first witness testimony taking place on July 27. The prosecution rested on Aug. 17, while the defense rested on Aug. 21. A few rebuttal witnesses were then called for the prosecution.

The defense called witnesses including Clancy's former coworker Margaret Hamp, Clancy's sister Allison Ozga, her mother Paula Musgrove, her mother-in-law Sue Clancy and emergency medicine doctor Michael Vulfovich. Several forensic psychiatrists have also testified.

Prosecutors called Patrick Clancy, a CVS general manager, a Three V restaurant hostess, the family's nanny, friends, teachers, and several police officers, first responders, toxicologists, and medical professionals to the stand. The 911 call Patrick Clancy made in January 2023 when he found his children was also played for the courtroom.

On July 31, jurors viewed the family's former home on 47 Summer St. in Duxbury, as well as the store and restaurant Patrick Clancy visited the evening the children were killed.

Clancy also addressed the judge for the first time on Aug. 4, saying she agreed to stipulate some of the facts in evidence and did not need to see certain witnesses testify.

On Friday, Sept. 4, after seven days of deliberations and two jury deadlocks, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial, sharing that the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision.
