Blue Ash Equipment Rental is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary this fall, marking five decades of serving contractors, homeowners and businesses across Greater Cincinnati.
Founded Oct. 1, 1976, by Cincinnati native Steve Heil, the company grew from a one-person operation into a long-running local business, according to a community announcement. Heil entered the equipment rental industry after working in construction for Crest Homes, where he saw a demand for tools and machinery that contractors and homeowners needed for projects.
Heil worked alone during the business's first two years, operating from a rented building on Blue Ash Road before expanding with the help of family members, including his father-in-law, Hugh "Perry" Ingram, who became the company's first employee after retiring.
The business steadily expanded during the 1980s and 1990s. Heil purchased property at 8976 Blue Ash Road in 1980 before constructing the company's current facility at 8970 Blue Ash Road in 1996.

Over time, the company broadened its inventory from hand tools and light equipment to larger machinery through long-standing relationships with Bobcat Enterprises and Vermeer Heartland.
Blue Ash Equipment Rental has employed more than 75 people during its history, with several employees spending more than 25 years with the company.
Among them were Ed Hamilton, who worked 29 years as a mechanic while also serving as a firefighter; John Harris, who retired after 28 years as office manager; and Reed Bartlett, who retired after 25 years.
Current employees also highlighted the family-oriented culture. Greg Hodapp said Heil offers flexibility when family needs arise, while James Waycaster described him as a hardworking employer who "deserves to be in business for 50 years."
The company has supported community events including Rossmoyne's St. Saviour Festival and Paint the Town. Blue Ash Mayor Jill Cole praised the milestone, calling the firm's contributions to the city and local economy substantial.
As the company looks ahead, Heil said its success has been built on reinvestment, loyal employees and generations of customers who have continued to rely on the business for projects large and small.
A reception to mark the company's 50th anniversary will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 1 and will include a proclamation from Blue Ash Mayor Jill Cole.
