BMW is officially putting the final touches on the next generation of its iconic compact sports sedan. Wrapped in tight camouflage, prototypes of the gas-powered G50-generation BMW 3 Series have been lapping the high-speed tracks and handling courses at the BMW Group testing facility in Miramas, France.

While BMW showcased the all-electric i3 sedan design earlier in March 2026, this latest update proves the brand is staying true to a "technology-open" philosophy. The 2027 3 Series lineup will feature a range of four-cylinder engines alongside a powerful six-cylinder variant. Every single internal combustion power unit comes backed by 48V mild hybrid technology to maximize both responsiveness and fuel efficiency.
Taking over as the dynamic hero of the ICE lineup is the BMW M350 xDrive. Serving as the sole model in the core lineup to pack a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine, it throws down some serious figures:
Power & Torque: 437 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque
Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds
Top Speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)
Drivetrain: 8-speed Steptronic transmission mated to standard intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive
Standard equipment on the M350 xDrive also includes an Adaptive M suspension, M Sport differential, and variable sport steering.
For the first time ever, an M Performance 3 Series will feature Drift Moment; a system engineered to deliver a pure, tail-happy rear-wheel-drive experience at the push of a button.
By decoupling the front axle and decoupling engine power entirely to the rear wheels (paired with DSC OFF and specialized multidisc clutch management), drivers can kick out the tail for controlled slides.
There is, however, a catch: the Drift Moment mode will launch over the course of 2027 and early adopters (buyers) will get the feature added retroactively via an over the air update.
Mechanically distinct from its EV sibling, the new gas 3 Series still inherits the striking Neue Klasse design language.
Exterior: Expect a sporty silhouette defined by a longer wheelbase, wider front and rear tracks, short overhangs, and a modern reinterpretation of the signature BMW "four-eyed" front fascia. Optional 20-inch staggered sports tires (245/35 R20 front, 275/30 R20 rear) will be available to complete the stance.

To keep the 3 Series standard-setting handling intact, BMW widened the vehicle's track, extended its wheelbase, and preserved a near-50/50 weight distribution. Beneath the skin, a double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle are paired with newly developed lift-related dampers (or optional Adaptive/Adaptive M suspension).
Linking the hardware together is the upgraded BMW Driving Stack, a cohesive software/hardware architecture that manages transverse dynamics, steering ratio inputs, integrated braking, and overall vehicle stability.
Production for the new BMW 3 Series is scheduled to kick off in the second half of 2026.
