Marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, area first responders are holding the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Friday at Shotwell Stadium, according to a city of Abilene media release.
A collaboration between the Abilene Fire Department, Metro Care, Abilene Police Department and Dyess Air Force Base Fire Department, the climb will be from 9 a.m.-noon. Participants can register online or at Shotwell on the day of the event.

The event will begin with a memorial ceremony featuring bagpipes and an honor guard.
The climb will consist of each participant climbing 2,200 steps — the equivalent of the 110 stories that were the height of each World Trade Center building.
The start times will be staggered to prevent overcrowding. Observers are encouraged to come out and cheer on the climbers. All proceeds will be donated to the Never Forget Fund which supports the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.
