Topeka police on Sept. 11 arrested a man accused of fatally shooting two 75-year-old men the previous evening in North Topeka's NOTO Arts District.
Kristen Knight Wahquahboshkuk, 21, was booked at 6 p.m. into the Shawnee County Jail, where he was being held in connection with intentional and premeditated first-degree murder, jail records said. Formal charges hadn't been filed.
Wahquahboshkuk was being held in connection with the Sept. 10 shooting deaths of Larry Smutney and Warren Eteeyan, who were both 75, assistant police chief Jennifer Cross said in a news release.
Cross confirmed that Wahquahboshkuk turned out to be the man pictured jn two photos police put out late Sept. 10 while asking for the public's help in identifying and locating him.
"Thank you to the public for your tips and information," she said.
Officers were called shortly before 7 p.m. Sept. 10 on a report of a shooting in the 900 block of N. Kansas Avenue, where they found one victim who was pronounced dead at the scene, Cross said.
The other victim was taken to a Topeka hospital, where he died of his injuries, she said.
