BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — The Beaufort community came together last night to gather at the Waterfront Park to honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Despite the rain, dozens of community members and city leaders attended the ceremony to reflect on those who lost their lives during the events of that day. City leaders say it's a solemn reminder, but it's also an opportunity to thank local service members for their sacrifices.
Three Beaufort first responders were awarded for their commitments during the ceremony:
Port Royal Staff Seargent Marlon Green for police officer of the year
Derrick Washington, a 25-year volunteer firefighter, for firefighter of the year
Shawn Gleeson, a first responder who served in New York City on 9/11, for EMS of the year
The event concluded with a procession of first responder vehicles that crossed the Woods Memorial Bridge in downtown Beaufort.
