ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) -- A New Bern man has plead guilty to multiple charges.
John Matthew Nigh, 38, of New Bern, plead guilty to three felony charges of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
These charges stemming from an incident in Hubert which occured back in June of 2024 in which Nigh fired multiple shots at Onslow County Sheriff's Office deputies.
On June 29, 2024, deputies with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office responded to the Hubert area after the information was received from Pamlico County Sheriff's Office regarding Nigh, who was wanted on multiple felony charges.
According to reports,Nigh was located at a residence in Hubert when deputies located him and tried to take him into custody. Nigh fled from the residence into a wooded area. Upon making contact with Nigh, he fired two rounds from a small caliber-handgun at the three deputies. None of the deputies were struck.
Deputies took Nigh into custody without further incident. He was taken to receive medical care for minor injuries before being taken to the Onlsow County Detention Center.
Nigh was charged with three counts of Attempted First-Degree
Murder, three counts of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer by Pointing a Firearm,
Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Resisting, Delaying, or Obstructing an Officer, and Shooting
Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.
He has been sentenced to 2-4 years in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
