Volkswagen has officially unveiled the second-generation 2027 Atlas Cross Sport. Built on the brand's updated MQB Evo architecture alongside its three-row counterpart, the new model continues as a design-focused, two-row alternative in the midsize SUV segment.

While both vehicles share the same underlying platform and wheelbase, the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport measures 195.6 inches in overall length-making it 5.4 inches shorter than the three-row Atlas. The reduction comes primarily from a shortened rear overhang and more aggressively sloped rear pillars. Additionally, the Cross Sport rides 2.1 inches lower, giving it a lower center of visual mass and a more compact profile on the road.
Rather than maximizing third-row seating capacity, the Cross Sport is configured exclusively as a five-seater. Omitting the third row allows the vehicle to prioritize second-row legroom and cargo volume behind the rear bench. This setup targets buyers (such as couples and empty nesters) who prefer cabin utility and passenger comfort over maximum occupant capacity.
The rear styling marks a clear divergence from the standard Atlas. The tailgate now sits nearly flush with the rear bumper to create a cleaner surface treatment. Above it, a steeply raked rear window line emphasizes the swept-back roofline. A full-width cross-body taillight assembly with standard dynamic turn signals mirrors the lighting graphics at the front, rounding out the vehicle's revised lighting signature.
Volkswagen uses specific trim elements to visually segregate the Cross Sport from the seven-seat model. On entry-level models, the front bumper trades the standard Atlas's piano-black trim for bold silver accents around the decorative lower intake elements. All trims also feature body-colored rocker panels, further visually lowering the vehicle's stance.
Powering the 2027 model is the evo5 generation of Volkswagen's EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Utilizing a variable geometry turbocharger, the powerplant produces 282 horsepower (a 13-horsepower increase over the outgoing generation) and 258 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine is available in front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive, with towing capacity rated at up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport will continue to be produced at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly facility, with sales scheduled to begin in early 2027.
