A 13-year-old Detroit boy who allegedly shot his father in the back before stealing the man's car last week has been charged, Wayne County prosecutors said.

The teen is charged as "adult designated," meaning a judge will have the option of sentencing him as a juvenile or an adult if he's found guilty of the multiple felonies levied against him, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a Tuesday press release.

The incident happened at 6:42 p.m. Aug. 11, when city police officers were dispatched to a home in the 18600 block of Bretton Drive near Southfield and Grand River, according to the statement.

The 42-year-old victim was bleeding on the porch suffering from a gunshot wound to the back, authorities said.

Medics arrived on the scene and transported the man to a hospital for treatment.

"It is alleged that the juvenile produced and fired a handgun at the victim, non-fatally wounding him," prosecutors said in the release. "It is further alleged that the juvenile robbed the victim of his vehicle before fleeing from the scene."

Authorities found the teen in Troy, Ohio later the same day.

He has been charged with one count of assault with intent to murder, punishable by up to life in prison.

The youth falso faces one count of discharge of a firearm in or at a building, one count of unlawfully driving away an automobile, and three counts of felony firearm.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy called the case "highly unusual" for a 13-year-old defendant.

"We struggled with this decision, and it will ultimately be the decisions of a judge as to whether, if convicted, there will be a juvenile or blended sentence," she said in a release. "We have carefully considered the alleged horrific facts and evidence in this case, and we are convinced that this is the best course of action, as well as being in the best interest of justice."

The defendant is being held in Miami County, Ohio, awaiting extradition to Michigan, prosecutors said.
