Three months ago, a $2 ticket in Florida and Texas made two Powerball players multimillionaires.

Because as they say in the lottery business, "it could happen to you."

Both winners had come forward to claim their windfall since the Saturday, May 2, 2026, Powerball drawing for $20 million. Powerball's site states the odds of winning the game's jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338. But while the pair of winners earned bragging rights to say they won a $20 million lottery jackpot, neither took home close to the total advertised.

Here's why and how much they took home.

A pair of winners from Texas and Florida won the $20 million Saturday, May 2, 2026, Powerball drawing. The cash option for that drawing was $9 million. In addition, there was one other big winner outside those jackpot tickets. A player in Georgia matched 5 plus the Power Play for a $2 million prize.

Saturday, May 2, 2026, winning Powerball numbers were 25-37-42-52-65 and the Powerball was 14. Power Play was 3x.

According to the Florida Lottery, La Caribena Grocery and Restaurant, 131 Buena Ventura Blvd., Kissimmee, Florida, sold the winning quick pick ticket for the Saturday, May 2, Powerball drawing to Noemi Figueroa of Kissimmee. Until Monday, Aug. 17, Figueroa was able to stay anonymous after claiming her windfall — $4,488,330.34 — from the state lottery.

The "names of lottery winners claiming prizes of $250,000 or greater will be temporarily exempt from public disclosure for 90 days from the date the prize is claimed, unless otherwise waived by the winner," Florida Lottery rules state.

The Florida Lottery issues commissions to retailers who sell jackpot-winning tickets, but it wasn't known how much La Caribena Grocery and Restaurant in Kissimmee earned.

In a May 27, 2026, news release, the Texas Lottery said a Leander resident claimed their half of the $20 million Powerball with a quick pick ticket from QuikTrip, 10742 E. Crystal Falls Parkway, Leander, Texas.

Powerball players in Texas must select the annual payments or cash value option at the time of ticket purchase.

The Texas Lottery player, who elected to remain anonymous, opted for the cash, receiving $4,488,330.34 before taxes.

"I'm not a regular lottery player, but I saw on a billboard that there had recently been a big jackpot, so the next morning when I stopped in at QuikTrip for a coffee, I bought a Powerball ticket," the Texas winner said in the news release. "A few days later we were out running errands when I noticed the ticket in my wallet and I thought to myself, 'I need to check that so I can toss it'. Only, this time when I checked it, I saw that I'd won. I was stunned. When my (spouse) returned to the car (they) asked me, 'Are you OK?' and I told (them), 'I think we've won the lottery.'"

The Texas Lottery news release continues to say the claimant said "their spouse thought they were overreacting, but the couple checked the numbers three more times and then placed the ticket in a safe when they got home. The claimant added: "We're planning to save the money for the time being until we decide what we want to do with it."

In addition, the QuikTrip convenience store in Leander, Texas, was eligible to receive a $250,000 retailer bonus, the Texas Lottery states.
