Regional school districts lead the state in extracurricular spending per student, data shows.

Shore Regional in Monmouth County topped all New Jersey school districts in extracurricular spending per pupil during the 2023-24 school year, logging $2,630 per student, according to state data.

The district has one high school that serves students from Loch Arbour, Allenhurst, Interlaken, West Long Branch, Sea Bright, Oceanport and Monmouth Beach.

The data comes from the New Jersey Department of Education's Taxpayers' Guide to Education Spending for the 2023-24 school year, the latest available data. (See the list of the top 25 districts below.)

Extracurricular spending includes expenses associated with athletics and other activities, including clubs, band, orchestra, publications and school theater productions, state officials said.

The extracurricular money also helps pay for staff who serve as club advisors, doctors who conduct sports physicals and equipment for sports and other activities.

Because high schools had more sports and extracurricular activities than elementary and middle schools, many school districts with only a high school spent more on extracurriculars than other districts, the data showed.

Two other Monmouth County districts also ranked near the top of the districts spending the most on extracurriculars. Henry Hudson Regional came in second at $2,332 per pupil, and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional placed fourth at $1,996.

Delaware Valley Regional in Hunterdon County ranked third at $2,032.

Several regional high school districts across the state also ranked in the top 25, including North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional in Hunterdon County at $1,874, Lakeland Regional in Passaic County at $1,845, and Ramapo-Indian Hill Regional in Bergen County at $1,768. Asbury Park, also in Monmouth County, ranked seventh at $1,818 per pupil.
