BATH, N.Y. (WETM) — Steuben County hosted its America 250 celebration in Bath. There was a time capsule that was locked up to be opened by the next generation.
"We had letters from legislators, we had a couple letters from some school children, we also newspapers from our time," said Griffin Bates, the Steuben County Historian. "So, it's a way to get people a slice of what was going on in Steuben County."

There are historical documents like the Constitution and Bill of Rights at Pulteney Park that was donated by the Charter of Freedom. According to Steuben County officials, Pulteney Park is the first place in New York State to have Charters of Freedom.
The time capsule will give people in the future the opportunity to see how those documents were implemented.

"Those who love history I think are really going to appreciate it because it will give you a snapshot into what was happening at the school you know in 2026-2027 what was happening at the county government," said Jack Wheeler, the Steuben County Manager. "It'll show how we are taking those founding documents and implementing them whether it be in municipal government, in school districts, and what that means to us."
The first time the capsule will be opened will be on September 17, 2087. At that time, people can put in new documents, and it will be opened 100 years later.
