In the icy waters of the Arctic, where most eyes are drawn to the imposing polar bear, scientists have uncovered a different kind of top hunter lurking below the surface. Out of sight but impossible to ignore, certain starfish have quietly claimed a role as dominant predators on the polar seafloor, forcing a rethink of how we view these northern marine worlds.
For generations, the polar bear has stood as the symbol of Arctic predatory power. That image was upended by recent research published in the journal Ecology, where scientists from Laval University revealed a surprising discovery: deep in the benthic zone, the ocean floor, Arctic starfish hold a status that rivals even that of the iconic bear.
This finding, emerging from the work of Rémi Amiraux and his colleagues, throws into question the ways we traditionally consider polar food webs. It also shines a light on the unexpected importance of the ocean floor's bustling ecosystems, which have long gone overlooked compared to their surface-dwelling counterparts.
The research team undertook a detailed analysis of the waters surrounding Southampton Island in Hudson Bay, Nunavut, Canada. Here, they examined 881 samples of seafloor-dwelling invertebrates, spanning 97 distinct groups, as well as 699 specimens from the open water above.
The results told a story of complexity at odds with common assumptions. Both the benthic (seafloor) and pelagic (open water) communities operated at similar trophic levels, indicating a parity in their respective food chains. The notion that the depths are home only to simple, linear food webs did not hold up; instead, the seabed revealed a hidden, intricate world of predator and prey.
One group stood out above all. The starfish family Pterasteridae systematically emerged as top predators in most food web analyses. Unlike the gentle image often associated with starfish, these echinoderms are anything but passive: their carnivorous diet includes a host of secondary predators, making them a dominant force in their environment.
But their tactics go beyond straightforward predation. These starfish display incredible opportunism. When dead pelagic creatures drift down to the seabed, Pterasteridae starfish are quick to consume them. This behavior gives the starfish the ability to alternate between active hunting and waiting for these nutrient-rich windfalls, making the most of every opportunity while conserving energy.
It's an approach eerily similar to that of the polar bear, which famously feasts on stranded whale carcasses and can survive for weeks on these occasional meals. While the prey may differ, macro-invertebrates for the starfish, large marine mammals for the bear, the ecological impact each has within its domain is strikingly comparable.
These findings don't just redraw the map of the Arctic seafloor, they also prompt wider questions about ocean ecosystems everywhere. Rémi Amiraux notes that this discovery "changes our understanding of how the Arctic coastal marine food web works." His team's research also demonstrated the existence of two distinct yet interconnected sub-networks in the region: one benthic, one pelagic, each contributing its own unique dynamics.
Crucially, starfish from the Pterasteridae family aren't limited to the Arctic. They're found across nearly all ocean basins, suggesting that similar super-predator roles could exist around the world wherever these creatures take hold. If this pattern of dominance plays out elsewhere, it may force marine biologists to reconsider the entire structure of oceanic food webs on a planetary scale.
The Canadian study makes it clear: any attempt to understand ocean ecosystems without diving into the details of benthic communities will leave our picture incomplete. Scientists are calling for future research efforts to consistently include analysis of the life living on or near the seabed. Only by embracing this holistic view, they argue, can we begin to grasp the true complexity and hidden power of life beneath the waves.
As research continues, the story of the Arctic starfish serves as a reminder that the ocean's greatest dramas and most consequential predators can lie where few expect, redefining what it means to rule the polar wild.
