An investigation is underway after a man died in police custody Saturday evening.

According to a statement by the Independent Force Investigation Team in King County, police found a person lying on the sidewalk in the 6000 block of Airport Way South shortly after 8 pm.

The statement says police found the person unable to speak or care for themselves and escorted them to a nearby police vehicle.

Police then requested aid while the person sat in the front seat of the car.

Police then said that while they were waiting for aid, the individual dropped to the ground and began rolling across the road.

Police then put the person in handcuffs.

While waiting for aid, the person lost consciousness, and when first responders arrived, they were unable to revive the person.

Under state law, the investigative team will conduct a death investigation.
